Waiting On Wednesday #44

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine where you can spotlight a book you're giddy with excitement to read so other people can be giddy with excitement too :)

Author: Paula Weston
Release Date: June 2012

It’s almost a year since Gaby Winters was in the car crash that killed her twin brother, Jude. Her body has healed in the sunshine of Pandanus Beach, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn’t help that every night in her dreams she kills demons and other hell-spawn.

And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who’s been appearing in Gaby’s dreams—he claims a history with her brother that makes no sense.
Gaby is forced to accept that what she thought she knew about herself and her life is only a shadow of the truth—and that the truth is more likely to be found in the shadows of her nightmares.

Who is Rafa? Who are the Rephaim? And most importantly, who can she trust?

Fast-paced and gripping, Shadows, the first book in the Rephaim series, is a standout paranormal romance for fans of Richelle Mead and Stephenie Meyer.

Author: Asa Bailey
Release Date: July 7th 2012
Publisher: Hodder Children's Books

Kathy Bilic used to be a typical 19 year old NYC student. That was until she started asking too many questions. Adopted as a child, Kathy had only a vague memory of her real parents. But then visited by visions of her blood-sister Amber, Kathy is called on a journey to London. A quest to discover her family history and to save her sister from in-human forces. Unbeknown to Kathy she is being drawn in to an evil game; a game to unlock the legend of The Highgate Vampire. A legend that spans 2000 years of human and vampire existence, form the last supper of Christ, through the bloody wars of medieval Europe and on to the beating heart of London’s fashionable, underground, vampire scene.

On her journey Kathy recruits the help of her eccentric Aunt Elizabeth along with Becky a feisty young tour guide and Antwain a hansom young vampire half-blood. The Highgate Vampire is an atmospheric, clever, sexy and truly unique vampire novel from a rising new talent.
Shadows: Um, YES PLEASE. Firstly, although not mentioned, it obviously has angels. Second.... she kills demons and other hell-spawn in her dreams? Creepy, but COOL!  So intrigued to learn more about Rafa and the Rephaim. And what exactly is the connection they have to Gaby's twin brother.

The Highgate Vampire: I can't say I'm overly familiar with the legend of The Highgate Vampire, but this book has encouraged me to go do more research. No doubt Asa has put a unique and intriguing spin on the legend. TGV does not sound like your typical vamp read and probably for that reason especially, I'M EXCITED.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?

  1. After reading VA, all I can say is MORE MORE MORE MORE VAMPIRES! Haha. Ooo, that sounds like a very awesome book. *sigh* Now I'm adding this to my TBR and I'm blaming YOU, BRODIE!! :P

Btw, I feel pity for Jacob. I can't believe he's the only guy who remains undefended. Team Jacob, please help this poor boy! LOL. Aaah, I seriously can't wait for February. It'll be the best month ever!!!

    1. Psh. I can *SO* believe.
He always looks so sweaty. Who wants a man who can't take 'No' for an answer and has body odour? Oh, and smells like wet dog *wrinkles nose*

    2. Can I be Team Anti-Jacob? Not Team Edward... just Team Opposed to Jacob XD

      Delete
    3. Also, last one, I promise: I think husbandman is Team Jacob O_____O
      *is afraid*

      Delete
    4. Eeee, I'm excited too, Celine!! But awww, poor fleabags. No one loves him... *starts howling to attract his fangirls*

GASP! Husbandman is Team Jacob? *finds this highly amusing* So you have a Team Edward cutout on one side of the bedroom door and hubby has a Jacob on the other? Actually, that would make a LOT of sense as to where you picked up the creepy lurker habits from...

      Delete
    5. *snort* He's probably more team 'WTF is with Edward and Bella and These Screaming Teenage Girls and YOU, SARAH, YOU Seeing Twilight The Movie SEVEN TIMES AT THE CINEMA.' He thinks vampires are kind of, I don't know... evil? And he likes them evil. He thinks Edward's a pansy, and at least Jake's a Real Man. *shudders*

So... umm... *I* don't have an Edward cutout? But my Mum and I bought BFF a life-size Edward cutout for Christmas the year before last. He looks *INTENSE*. Me? I have an Edward Barbie doll that's hanging upside down on the wall of my study... because, you know, he's a vampire? Bats? The sleep upside down? I didn't actually put him there... serious... it was my cousin O____O

AAAAND *NOW* you'll ask why I have an Edward barbie, right? *cough*

    6. But oh gosh, Jacob is TAYLOR LAUTNER in the movie. I hated Jacob in the book but I couldn't resist if it's TAYLOR LAUTNER!! But we all know who gets the girl, so...
And Brodie, since when are you a werewolf girl? Wait, I want my own Edward cut out too!! OMG Sarah, you actually have an Edward Barbie DOLL? Me want one too!!!!!!!

      Delete
    7. Taylor Lautner is like... ick.
It's like he ran into a wall and his face got all squished up :P

And, uh... YES. I actually, really, truly have an Edward barbie doll. It was a gag-gift from my Stepfather In Law (who is BRITISH and insanely cool). I laughed, but didn't tell him how much I truly cherished it.

When I first got it, I brought it home and sat it on Husbandman's bedside table so it watched him while he slept, and every time he woke up in the morning, it'd be the first thing he saw :D

I was aiming for creepy :D

    8. Seven times at the cinema?!?! Edward Barbie Doll aka sparkly bat boy?! Okay, I think it's hilarious that you have an Edward doll that hangs upside down on the wall haha.

Sarah, you don't need to aim high, you nail the creepy brilliantly LOL. You make life more exciting ;)

Haha I'm not really a wolf girl, Celine. I mean, I like them (Tyler! Ren!), but I'm neither Team Edward or Jacob. Not a huge fan of the books, but if I was forced to choose I MIGHT go Jacob ;)

      Delete
    9. Seven...ish...
Um, OK, so I know that's pretty damning evidence, but I'm actually not that massive a fan. I *like* the books, and I *like* the movie, but it was more just the camp value, and my BFF and me had just started hanging out, and she's the most obsessive Rpattz fan I've EVER. MET. and so she was like 'there's this movie and it has Cedric in it! CEDRIC! RPATTZ! CEDRIC!' and once we'd seen it twice (the second time cos, well, she wanted to see it a second time), then Mum wanted to see it, then Mum wanted to see it again, and by that time, it was more like a running joke to see how many times we could see it... if you know what I mean?

      Uhhh... yeah :D

Ooooh, if I don't *need* to aim high to nail the creepy, imagine what I could do if I *did* try :O
      >:D

    10. Oh Brodie!!! You really are going to go for Jacob if you are forced to choose? Then we must be enemies! :P I've only watched Twilight 4 times in the cinema. In DVDs? Countless times. Also, I need to get my 3 sets of Twilight Barbie dolls: Edward, Jacob, Bella so I can put them in all these weird positions like hanging upside down, LOL

      Delete
    11. Celine... are you making fun of me? :O
      :P

    12. Dearest Sarah, I am not making fun of you! :P I am just making you...happy and smile? :) LOL

  2. OOOOOHHAAAAHHHH. Shadows sounds goooooood.
Wait... hang on... There is a REAL legend of a Highgate Vampire? Bwah?

    ...Ooooh, I <3 Wikipedia

    1. OOH Wikipedia! *reads* Okay, I have NEVER heard of it before, I just said 'not overly familiar' to at least sound like I was VAGUELY familiar and not a total idiot :D

      *DELIBERATELY DECLINES TO ANSWER* Buahahahahahha.

      Delete
    2. Well, I thought it was made up... and you said 'not overly familiar', so I was like 'wha? It's REAL?' *runs of to Wikipedia* It worked. It totally worked. I was impressed. *nods*

  3. Great picks! OMG I can't believe Jacob is left undefended! That's so . . . typical. I'm Team Jacob and I would totally defend him but I'm already defending another lover of mine . . . pity. haha. :)

    1. Haha poor Jakey! Actually, if you really do want to defend him, you're more than welcome to! For the leftover guys (well, just Jacob) we're allowing participants to write for an extra guy if the want (of course, you'll get an extra entry into the prize packs since you're doing double the work!). So if interested.... let us know! :)

  4. EEEEEE VAMPIRES!! ME LIKEYYY :D Okayy so I've been really excited for Shadows, except after reading the last part of the blurb, where STEPHENIE MEYER is mentioned, I'm sort of hesitant to read it now:S BUT RICHELLE MEAD IS ALSO MENTIONED! So maybe I won't abandon it after all :)
Awwwww poor Jacob! But I'm still team Edward in the books, and er...Team Taylor in the movies :D

    1. Haha I rarely ever pay attention to the 'for fans of...' anymore, because nearly every dystopian has Suzanne Collins name on it and likewise with paranormal romance and Stephanie Meyer. So I've learnt not to judge based on that alone. I'm loving the plot for Shadows! Cannot wait for release :D

  14. I can't seem to get enough of vamps and the Highgate sounds very intriguing. It sort of reminds me of The Historian but way more paranormal. Great pick it is officially on my TBR list.

  15. Shadows has a creepy vibe that I like (and the cover definitely hints at angels - wonder what the connection is?). And I hadn't heard of The Highgate Vampire before, but it sounds awesome! I like that the MC is a bit older too. Great picks as usual :).

    ReplyDelete
  16. WOW!!!! <-- No, I don't mean to be punny but sometimes it just happens LOL! x) But oh my gosh, Brodie, the cover & synopsis for Shadows seriously kicks some major butt! Angels and demon-killing while dreaming?? No word describes that better than creepy-cool! And I've never heard of the Highgate Vampire before but anything that has to do with originality & vampires definitely makes my wish list!

These are such AMAZING picks for your wow-worthy WOW, Brodie! My TBR list is already majorly MASSIVE, but this post just made it two books longer! :P <3

  17. Yay more vampire books! The Highgate Vampire sound like it has serious potential--I'm going to look that legend up as well!
I'll pretty much read anything about angels too haha, and the Shadows synopsis is making me nothing but curious!
    Awesome picks as always :P

  18. Two great picks as usual Brodie!
Shadows sounds soo good though! I mean... it just has everything good in it, doesn't it :D hehe.
Thanks for placing them on my radar, ahhh, yes :D

  19. Both of these books sound really interesting, actually! I'm totally getting into this whole angel thing. That's what caught my eye initially on the Shadows cover. It's a book 1, also, which I love to see since I'm absolutely addicted to trilogies and series.

The second book is of maybe even a little more interest to me. I haven't read a good vamp novel in a while. I MISS my vampires! :)

Also, LOVE TRIANGLE DEBATES?!?! Count me in! I'm all over that :)!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. These are both new to me! I'm not a big fan of vampires but you're right that The Highgate Vampire does sound different from most vampire reads, since it's based on this legend. And the fact that the protagonist is 19 means it qualifies for my "new adult" reading challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yaaaay, so glad you found a defender for Jacob. Me luuuuurv him <3 And awesome WoW picks :) I added them both on Goodreads. Weird but I cannot seem to ever grow tired of those vamps.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love the sound of both books! <3 But I can see that one of them is vamp-related. So I'm still thinking about that. :) I'm still on vamp-break! Oh, you always have the best picks! <3 Someday when I'm not too busy, I'll join you in finding the most intriguing reads!
