Who would you choose?
Lucian “Lucky” Spark has been recruited for training by the totalitarian government known as The Establishment. According to Establishment rules, if a recruit fails any level of the violent training competitions, a family member is brutally killed . . . and the recruit has to choose which one.
As the five recruits form uneasy alliances in the hellish wasteland that is the training ground, an undeniable attraction develops between Lucky and the rebellious Digory Tycho. But the rules of the training ensure that only one will survive—the strongest recruits receive accolades, wealth, and power while the weakest receive death.
With Cole—Lucky’s four-year-old brother—being held as “incentive,” Lucky must marshal all his skills and use his wits to keep himself alive, no matter what the cost.
Well it's not Wednesday, but I felt like posting a WoW, so... LET'S PRETEND IT'S WEDNESDAY. END OF THE WEEK IS NEARLY HERE, WOOHOO!
My thoughts:
*shudder* Not only are you forced to enter into a violent training competition where the weakest face death at the end (I'm getting a Hunger Games vibe! In a good way), but if you fail any of the competitions... you have to choose a family member to die? Can you really find a more sick and twisted government than that? I'm raging already!! I can only imagine what effect reading the book will have on me.
I'm seriously in the mood for an intense, edge-of-your-seat book like The Culling, except it's not out until March 2013. This makes Brodie grumpy and forces her to glare at her bookshelf for ten minutes for not having a suitable alternative on standby to read.
And bonus points: male/male potential romance! We need to see more of this in YA.

I love the sound of this! I'm not really feeling the cover, but the book description more than makes up for that. I'm getting a sort-of Hunger Games-y vibe too, with the hellish wasteland and only one potential survivor. 2013 needs to get here soooon! :D
ReplyDeletecheers . iiiiii . making random hand movements . i am 4 real . iiiii . the author said it has lgbt characters .iiiii .. ii .eeee. ok acting manly now . yes yes . i can wait for this . * speaks in a posh brittain voice . iiiii lol
ReplyDeleteCan't say I'll read this book but it has this cool Hunger Games-vibe to it, like what Sam said, so that's great to have. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my god, this sounds so awesome and kick-butt! BUT 2013 seems so far away! :'( Thanks for sharing. :D
ReplyDelete:( Nice!!!! This does sound similar to Hunger games with a little extra. I am always so sad when the books I want are not coming out till next year. Fantastic choice!
ReplyDeleteOMG! This sounds awesome. I had never heard of it before, but I will for sure be checking it out. This government makes me want to rage too! I expect a full rant in your review once you get your hands on this.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, WoW on a Sunday!
ReplyDelete....oh my gosh, my heart dropped to the floor with that thought...I agree, very THG-ish, but that twist is-IS-IS--! -flailing arms- WICKED! TT o TT Definitely sounds intriguing, this one! Awesome pick, Brodie, and happy end of the week!
Brodie, you are ADORABLE! Only you could pull off a WoW post on a Sunday! ;) I've seen this book around and while it sounds like a lot of other dystopian novels, it seems to have some unique elements as well which seem SO fascinating! Plus, you're totally right about your bonus point - we really do need to see more of that type of romance in YA! It'll be such a nice and refreshing change! :) Fantastic pick, Brodie! :D

Brodie, I have three words for you: GIMMIE GIMMIE GIMMIE!!!! This sounds amazing! I want it nooooow! Though, I don't think I'm too keen on a guy being called Lucky. I don't know, it just sounds like a girls' name to me. But it may grow on me as I read. I WANT IT NOW!
ReplyDeletehate to sound all braggy....but I've read the early version of this book and I can tell you IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!! I've always wondered why you can't have page turning action with well developed cbaracters....why should we have to choose? Well, with THE CULLING we don't! Expertly written, heart pounding, incredible....start marking the days on your calendar and pre-order!
ReplyDeleteEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE BRODIE! How is it that I've never heard of this book before? THE CULLING SOUNDS AMAZING! And Hunger Games vibe? Well count me in! Thank you so much for putting this book on my radar now ;) Plus, waiting on wednesday on sunday? IT'S PERFECT ♥
ReplyDeleteI was 'Lucky' enough to read this edge of your seat page turner - it was phenomenal!! Action packed, but sooo heartfelt. Moments were truly gut wrenching, cry- your-eyes -out sad. Other moments I wanted to scream at the Establishment!! But my favorite parts were... Well I guess I should leave some of it for you to read. This book is not to be missed!
ReplyDeleteOh, I like the sound of a brutal, gruesome Hunger Games-esque dystopian world too. :) I highly anticipate reading this novel, but why must it have to be released in 2013?? *sobs*
ReplyDeleteAnd I only wish the cover were more attractive. The colour scheme is unappealing, the font and image outdated and low quality... Ha, I'm really looking forward to it anyways. :)
Happy Wednesday, Brodie!!
Oh. Wow. This sounds excellent. I hadn't heard of this before--you're just the best at putting new books on my radar Brods! It definitely gives me a Hunger Games vibe too, but you know what. If it's anywhere as good as The Hunger Games...ME WANT!
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile. "Waiting on Wednesday...on Sunday!"

ReplyDeleteDUDE THIS SOUNDS FREAKING IN. SANE. I'm so adding this to my TBR pile! I enjoyed the Hunger Games, and this sounds really close to it! I'm interested to see how the book explains WHY the government is so brutal though, there better be a good reason. >.< GREAT pick this week, Brodie!
ReplyDeleteWHY IS IT NOT 2013 YET?!?!?! THIS SOUNDS SO FREKAINGGG AMAZING, I WANT TO DEVOUR IT NOW! I sense some non-stop action! Oh and as for male/male romance...you might want to try Hushed! :) It's a really awesome contemporary :D

ReplyDeleteTHIS. SOUNDS. AMAZING. AWESOME CHOICE, BRODIE <3 Seriously, how have I not heard of this books before?! Male/Male romance isn't something I've seen a lot of in YA... Maybe that's just because I live under a rock or something, but it's got me really excited for this to be released XD
