2012 Author Interview & Giveaway: Kristen Simmons!

Christmas is coming. So is the Apocalypse. So let's bring in the doomsday year in style! Each week leading up to the new year, a 2012 author will answer a short interview and generously give away a copy of their book!

Introducing apocalyptic author #1..... drum roll please, for the cleverly strategic Kristen Simmons! Author of the 2012 dystopian novel, ARTICLE 5.

Why should Santa fill every stocking next year with a copy of Article 5?
Because 2012 is coming! If the world ends, you’ll want to be prepared! Chase and Ember can show you how to survive if Post-Apocalypsia involves scrounging evacuated zones for food and supplies, evading compliance officers, and resisting a moral regime (which, let’s be honest, it totally will, right?). You need to be ready for anything!

What is the best or worst Christmas gift you've ever received?
Best Christmas gift: my husband had a star named after me. Yeah. He’s pretty much the best.
Worst Christmas gift: my grandmother once sent me skin tight, low rise, pleather pants. Um…thanks Grandma… (In her defense, she thought they were for skiing.)

What's been your favourite YA novel of 2011?
There were a ton of great books that came out in 2011! I guess I’d probably have to say Divergent by Veronica Roth (because it had everything a great story needs: excitement, danger, kissing, a sexy boy, punching, zip lines, and THINGS BLOWING UP!), and Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (because it’s so unique – what’s not to love about a ghost/human romance/horror? AND it’s funny!).

And your most desperately needed of 2012?
Oh, this is hard! I’m part of the Apocalypsies, which is a group of 2012 YA debut authors, and ALL of their books are going to be fantastic. Although if I had to name a couple, I can tell you for a fact (because I’ve had the honor of reading them early!) that Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry, Cracked by K.M. Walton, Renegade by Jess Souders, and Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff are all going to be awesome. Ok, maybe that was more than a couple. Sorry.

Do you have any plans to survive and/or fight in the 2012 Apocalypse? (this covers any
apocalyptic belief-system... zombies, aliens, mother nature seeking revenge, assassin
automatons, Klaus and his hybrids from The Vampire Diaries, etc).

  • Immediately find Bear Grylls. That guy is going to be clutch come the end of the world.
  • If Plan A falls through (he’s already been turned to a zombie, vampire, etc.), proceed immediately to Plan B.
  • Step 1: Secure an operations base. I’m thinking a jail. It’s got everything we need – fortified walls, steel doors, weapons, cells, cots, even a kitchen (maybe not a clean one, but hey, better than nothing). Most likely all the prisoners will evacuate the second the guards disappear, so the place will be empty and ready for occupation.
  • Step 2: Locate a water source. Ideally the jail is located next to a lake or river, though if that doesn’t work out we’ll want a wet-weather environment so we can set up rain barrels.
  • Step 3: Recruit a team. I’m looking for applicants that can cover basic needs first – hunters and fisherman, and definitely soldiers. People with trained weapons experience, preferably those who can snipe off zombies or stake vampires, just in case. Soon after that, I’ll be adding a medical staff, including someone with experience in homeopathy or natural remedies. Pharmacies aren’t going to last forever.
  • Step 4: Train an army. To fight off anyone or anything.
  • Step 5: Build a radio tower and attempt to make contact with other survivors. Be ready for hostile negotiations.

That’s the plan so far…let me know if you think of anything I’m missing…

New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC have been abandoned.

The Bill of Rights has been revoked, and replaced with the Moral Statutes.

There are no more police—instead, there are soldiers. There are no more fines for bad behavior—instead, there are arrests, trials and maybe worse. People who get arrested don’t usually come back.

Seventeen-year-old Ember Miller is old enough to remember that things weren’t always this way. Living with her rebellious single mother, it’s hard to forget that people weren’t always arrested for reading the wrong books or staying out after dark. That life in the United States used to be different.

In the three years since the war ended, Ember has perfected the art of keeping a low profile. She knows how to get the things she needs—like food stamps and hand-me-down clothes—and how to pass the random home inspections by the Federal Bureau of Reformation. Her life is as close to peaceful as circumstances allow. That is, until her mother is arrested for noncompliance with Article 5 of the Moral Statutes. And what’s worse, one of the arresting officers is none other than Chase Jennings…the only boy Ember has ever loved.
Article 5 is released February 14 2012 by Tor Teen
