Earth, Fire, Air, Water – they are more than you dream.

As an air Elemental, 17-year-old Emily Morgan doesn’t have much power. That’s okay—she knows what happens to kids who do.

Like Michael Merrick. He’s an earth Elemental, one with enough power to level cities. Which makes him sexy. Dangerous. And completely off limits. At least according to Emily’s family.

But her summer job puts her in close contact with Michael, and neither of them can help the attraction they feel. When forces of nature like theirs collide, one misstep could get someone killed. Because Emily’s family doesn’t just want her to stay away from him.

They want him dead.
Brigid Kemmerer is my new favourite author. I think it's obvious that I feel in love with Storm, so naturally, at mention of a prequel novella... uh, yeah, DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD DOWNLOAD! If you haven't read Storm, fear not, no Stormy spoilers in this review and Elemental is set before Storm, so it's safe to read first.

Michael is a young man weighed down with a lot of responsibility in Storm. He doesn't have the luxury most guys in their early 20's do, not when he's the guardian of his three teenage brothers. In Elemental, the prequel novella set 5 years before, we probe deeper into Michael's history and personality. He's an Earth Elemental, one who can harness astounding power, a Pure. That means he's dangerous and there are those who want him dead because of what he can do. Emily is the daughter of those people, but doesn't quite harbour their psychotic tendencies (alright, so maybe I'm a little biased toward her family). She's an amazing mix of sweet and caring girl-next-door, with a bit of a fierce streak. I wouldn't recommend getting on her bad side when there's a golf-putter within arms reach.

My heart really aches for Michael. Especially during a moment where he's genuinely happy, because so help me, I feel overjoyed that he's finally latched onto a bright spark in life. He's been on the receiving end of so much undeserved crap and yet he still remains so good at heart. He cares deeply about his family and he's just a decent person. So in life's typically cruel fashion, the girl who might be the one to offer a ray of sunlight just happens to be the sister of the biggest asshole in the country. It needs to be noted, very loudly, very boldly, how much I hate Tyler and his douche friend, Seth. My anger toward them raged a storm in.. well, Storm, and grew into something much more physical (okay, so trying to stab an ebook will have disastrous effects on your computer screen) in Elemental. They are jerks, end of story.

What I especially love about Elemental (and also Storm) is that it doesn't feel like your typical YA paranormal romance. The attraction is subtle, not always obvious, but hints at something that has the potential to be deep and earth-shattering. Something beautiful. Dangerous? Of course. But what's beauty without a little risk? The uncertainty of what they're feeling wars with the prejudices they've been fed while growing up. You're waiting on tenterhooks to see how things progress, for that blossoming attraction to break free. Every encounter between them feels so charged, and with every bitter, resentful word spoken, you can see the massive wall between them slowly crumble away, taking the anger and distrust along with it.

As she demonstrated in Storm, Brigid has once again channelled Geppetto and turned her fictional characters into real boys (and girls). Because they never feel flat or 2D, but fully fleshed, living souls, buzzing with a thousand different emotions that you feel right alongside them. You understand the motivation behind their every action and desire, what drives them forward, what makes them tick. You can't help but grow an emotional attachment to Michael and Emily, to believe in them, cheer for them and above all, hope for them.

Seeing as I've read Storm already, I know what the future holds for these two. I won't comment on that because it's ridiculously spoilery, but when you consider what happens after the ebook ends, oh my heart. It's experiencing a lot of activity. What kind of activity... well, I guess you'll have to read Storm to find out ;) We only catch a small glimpse of the other Merricks here, but I love that the twins, Gabriel and Nick, are just as naughty when they're 12 and Chris is so eager and lonely and you just want to envelope him in a massive bear hug. And have I mentioned that I freaking love these brothers?

Elemental is yet another reason why Brigid Kemmerer is a rising star in YA. She has phenomenal talent. That woman is going places. High places. I cannot recommend enough that you run over to Amazon, Barnes and Noble or Google Books and download this for just 99 CENTS! And then walk, don't run (who am I kidding, SPRINT) to preorder a copy of Storm. Heck, throw Spark, the sequel, in your cart while you're there, Gabriel will be immensely happy.

5/5 Golden Apples!

Because I love the Merrick's so much, I'll give away TWO copies of Elemental from Amazon. If you don't have a Kindle (like me), you can download a very free and legit app from Amazon to your PC/ipad/phone/whatever that lets you read Kindle ebooks. To be entered, just include in your comment which elemental power you'd like to control - earth, fire, water or air? I'll pick winners on the weekend!

ALSO: Brigid is offering every person who downloads Elemental the chance to win a copy of Storm! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

  1. Great review! Seems to be the kind of book I personally like. :-)

As for the elemental power, I am thinking of air. Perhaps I could literally fly with it? That will be fun!

  2. I really want to read Storm. What isn't to like? Boys and the elements. All this waiting is hard on my constitution. lol. That makes me sound like a granny, which I am not.

  3. Oh by the way I think I would like to control water. It is everywhere, even inside people.

  4. :o :o :o
I want to read it nowwwwww. I actually pre-ordered it and just got it yesterday and omg... TIME COME TO ME! *begs* Soon, soon! *pets* And soon Storm comes out! I already have it on pre-order but :O the author is offering a copy? SQUEE. I've already been there and back now! Crossing my fingers I'll be the lucky oneeee. Lol! Awesome review Brodie, and thanks for getting me so excited (read: desperate) about books out there. ;)

  5. I recognised the author's name when I started your review and thought "this is the author of that book Brodie REALLY likes!"

I think water would be the best or wind...or fire - agh!

  6. I pre-ordered my copy of Storm last week. I can't wait just to get the email telling me the pre-order has been released. I want my copy already!!

I think I would want to control either the element of earth or air... probably more earth.

  7. Oooh I would love to control air! I think it would be fantastic :)

    The Muggle

  8. Man oh man I really need to read this series! Everything about the books sounds amazing! Great review, Brodie!

  9. I think it would be fire for me. I have always loved fire <3

  10. Hahaaa, you and your Merrick brothers obsession :S (IT'S VERY UNHEALTHY. LEAVE THESE POOR BROTHERS ALONE, AND GIVE OTHER PEOPLE A CHANCE!) But of course, it's utterly hilarious to read about how you absolutely love these brothers, & your delusions of a certain brother *cough*Gabriel*cough* in BED with you! *sigh* Your review is seriously making me DESPERATE to start reading Storm, BUT I'm currently reading THE IMMORTAL RULES, and that know, takes priority :S BUT DON'T WORRY! THE UP SIDE OF ME NOT READING IT YET, IS THAT YOU GET THE MERRICK BROTHERS ALL TO YOURSELF. For the time being.
Awwwwwww<3 Michael and Emily! And why, why WHY is 'Tyler' always the name given to the BAD GUY?!?!?!
trying to stab an ebook will have disastrous effects on your computer screen LMAO. BUT SUCKED IN! I GET TO READ IT ON PAPER<3 (Oh, wait. YOU DID TOO, DIDN'T YOU!!?!?)
Hmmm...maybe I should read Elemental first, and then Storm?
Anywayyy....FANTASTIC review Brodie<333 But just...if you wrote a little less of these fabulous reviews, I'd actually get some studying done :S BUT DON'T EVER STOP WRITING REVIEWS<3 hahahahaha

  11. Ohhh, Brodie, it is OFFICIAL! You are now the poster girl for all things that have to do with the Merrick brothers because I swear no one gets me as excited to meet them as you do!!! (I didn't even want to read these books before you and now they're all I can think about LOL!) I want to meet Michael and feel happy for him and kick butt for him even though he could probably kick my butt. I just want to read this book!! x)

AMAZING review, Brodie!! It may just be for the novella, but oh my gosh am I EVER super-excited for Storm all over again too! Double whammy, right?? :) <3

P.S. I'm going to go harass my sister because she just got the new iPhone, and if she could part with it for five seconds, maybe I can buy this book so I can read it LOL (this is harder than it seems)! But just in case: I'm definitely a water girl! ;)

  12. It amazes me how dazzled you are by this series. So much so, that I don't even know why I'm resisting.

"The attraction is subtle, not always obviously, but hints at something that has the potential to be deep and earth-shattering. Something beautiful. Dangerous? Of course. But what's beauty without a little risk? The uncertainty of what they're feeling wars with the prejudices they've been fed while growing up."

That's the selling point right there. Just the way you worded it hints at something breathtaking, and you can practically feel your stance on their romance leaping off your review. Forbidden romances are always alluring, so I'm positively intrigued. And I can tell you loved this book, through the vibe I'm getting and with each paragraph. The fact that each character was able to incite so much emotion out of you speaks highly of these books. I REALLY gotta pick up Storm, darn it!

  13. That's it! I am going to read this series as soon as possible. I love that you describe the characters are so developed and fleshed out. I love when you are able to really connect to them.

It sounds like the writer was able to really make you feel about her world and her characters which is amazing!

I love how excited you get about this book, and as a result I HAVE to read it. Plus, hot boys...:)

  14. This comment has been removed by the author.

  15. Great review! It sounds good, I'll have to add it to my TBR list!
Out of all elements, I would like to control the water.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  16. Haha, I loved that bit at the end of review where you suggest pre-ordering Spark too - "Gabriel will be immensely happy!" Well, you would know ;)

AWESOME review, Brodie! Omgoooood! I need this series already! I will be getting this very shortly, but not just yet, on the off chance I'll be lucky and win a copy :P

So I would like to control Earth. Because - unless you need a water someone - I think it would be cool to make flowers grow, just to see them all pretty and cheery. Like daisies! Oooh, I love daisies! Yes, I am quite possibly a lot girlier than I actually thought.

THEN AGAIN! Oh Brodie, you're going to have to help me, because I've forgotten her name... actually it might not even be her! But in one of the Vampire Academy books, there's a scene where someone does something super awesome with water. Right? I'm not dreaming? I'm thinking when.. ah, spoilers.. ok, when Rose and a few friends are trapped in a basement? By some not very cool people. I can't for the life of me remember which book. But the water thing was cooool. Unless I'm completely dreaming it up. Which is very possible. I'll shut up now.

    1. IT WAS MIA! IN FROSTBITE! WITH ISAIAH! AND ROSE! Right? Is that what you're talking about? haha. She tried to suffocate him with it, as a distraction to help Rose, I think? Oh man, I NEED a reread of the VA books!

But anyway, awesome choices! :D I don't know which I'd choose.... earth because I'd love to be so intune with it, but water as a survival choice because I am deathly afraid of drowning, so having control of water would definitely be helpeful ;)

    2. Oooh, you are a clever, clever girl with an awesome memory! It was like a bubble of water, right?! That is cool. I doubt I'd actually do it, but just knowing I could, I'd feel better about not so great people, haha!

Yes, clever idea! I don't particularly want to drown either, sounds pretty good! I'll go with water then! :)

  17. water would be awesome
    great review brodie
Thanks for the chance to win!

  18. Water! WATER WATER WATER WATER! That would be the coolest thing...ever. :) Thanks for the giveaway!

  19. This sounds kinda awesome! I love how the romance is really subtle...I hate overblown romances. I think I'll have to check this and Storm out now it's had such a glowing review...

I think I'd want to control air...then I'd never be cold cause I could just like...heat the air around me up ;) and do other cool things to but mainly....not be cold anymore haha

Thanks for the chance to win!

    The Cait Files

  20. BRODIE!!! Sorry I haven't been commenting on your blog lately!! I HAVE SO MANY EXAMS and SCHOOL is depriving me! Anyway, I did saw your Twitter convos with Brigid and other Aussies and boy I WAS SO TEMPTED to join in the conversation although I'm supposed to stay away from Twitter until my exams are over! BUT NOW my exams are over!

(Actually, they're not over. There's still one more! But it's still next week so forget about it! :P)

AAAAAAA!!!! I AM DYING TO READ STORM!! Elemental sounds AWESOME and I am DYING to meet the brothers!

Hmm..if I can control any element, I'd choose WATER! Because water is well...water? LOL. I just love water! :P

    AWESOME AWESOME review, Brodie! <3

    1. You totally have to join the conversation! I'm on every morning. (Well, morning for me, nighttime -- I think -- for you.)

  21. Yet another awesome review, I always enjoy reading them :)

If I could control any element it'd probably be air - always been fascinated that something you can't see can be so powerful, and can be gentle and destructive in equal measures.

  22. These books sound very interesting. Thanks for the review.

I would want to control earth. Maybe because I'm a Taurus, LOL I love nature and watching things grow. The power of the earth to take a seed and make it into a living thing, awesome. Or to take something dead and either preserve it (as a fossil) or completely dissolve it.

    1. I don't know how to post on here without showing as Anonymous. I don't have a Google acct, AIM, or whatever.

  23. Id like to control water ;) being a pieces I think Id be within my element ! great review Brody ;)

Wait... when you say you're biased towards her family... it means you like them, right? Because they're psychotic? Therefore relatable? Mwahaha! *hides*

Um... seriously? This sounds amazing. Duh. Ummm... is it weird that I'm possible even more excited to read Storm than effing INSURGENT? Uhh... true story. I LOVE that the characters were able to illicit such a strong response from you! KAHKAFGJAG! AMAZING. WANT. OH WAIT! I HAVE! *CACKLES*

♥ your faithful psychotic sidekick (I know you like 'us')

  25. I would like to control fire.
